Care & materials

Recycled glass is tougher than it looks and less tolerant of heat than you might assume. Everything below applies to all twelve pieces.

Washing

Warm water and a little dish soap, then dry with a soft cloth. For the narrow-necked Fen and the Rill bottles, use a bottle brush rather than pushing a cloth in — a cloth gets stuck and you will spend twenty minutes with a chopstick getting it out again.

Hard-water marks come off with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and warm water left to stand for an hour. Do not use bleach, and do not use anything abrasive: recycled glass scratches more readily than commercial flat glass.

The raffia

The raffia on the Rill range is a dry natural fibre. Keep it dry, do not submerge the neck, and expect it to lighten slightly over a year in strong sunlight. If it gets damp, stand the vase somewhere airy rather than trying to dry it with heat.

Do

  • Hand wash in warm soapy water
  • Use a bottle brush for narrow necks
  • Change flower water every two or three days
  • Put a little water in the tall Drift to steady it
  • Lift the large pieces with two hands

Do not

  • Put any piece in the dishwasher
  • Pour boiling water into cold glass
  • Use bleach or abrasive cleaners
  • Soak the raffia neck wrap
  • Stand a piece where it can be knocked

What is normal, and what is not

Normal: small bubbles trapped in the wall, a wall that is thicker on one side than the other, a base that is very slightly uneven, a faint green cast in clear glass, and a colour that reads differently at the shoulder than at the lip. These are how you tell recycled hand-blown glass from machine-made glass.

Not normal: a crack, a chip on the rim, or a piece that will not stand up. If you get one of those, email info@jarevion.com with a photo and we will replace it.
